In 2021, ASIC and the ATO announced that all company Directors will be required to hold a Director Identification Number (Director ID).
A Director ID is a unique 15-digit identifier you need to apply for once and will keep forever. It will help prevent the use of false or fraudulent Director identities. All Directors of a company, registered Australian body, registered foreign company or Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander corporation will need a Director ID.
How do I apply for a Director ID?
Application for a Director ID is a three-step digital process using a smart device:
1. Directors will need to verify their identity through the myGovID app using two of the following Australian identity documents:
(Note: myGovID is different to myGov)
2. Open a new web browser (not the myGovID app) and login to conduct a proof of record ownership about your individual ATO record by answering questions from any two of the following documents::
Note: once you enter your myGOVID email address, you will be asked to accept or enter a four digit code. To do this, open the myGovID app and enter the four digit code. This provides a two factor Identification.
3. Apply for Director ID number to be issued:
If you cannot get a myGovID, you will need to apply by phone or paper, depending on your situation.
